A hidden potential opened the first time that I touched clay. Some feeling, very primitive touched me, the tactile coolness of wet clay, the smell-dank and sensuous, memories of a carefree childhood playing in the mud. Once the secret doors were opened, out gushed more and more avenues of possibilities in stone, found objects, fiber, paint, bone, shells, and wood. Themes based in myth, spirituality, nature, human form and human nature are all interesting to me and common in my art.
I start my work with an idea coming from a sketch, photo, or other forms of inspiration, then keeping an open mind I work intuitively and let the piece reveal itself to me as I work, no matter what the medium is. Oftentimes the art does not resemble in any way the source of inspiration it was conceived from, becoming totally unique and quirky.
I want to leave my art open to interpretation by the viewer and hesitate to name each piece, instead inviting them to join in and create a personal connection to my pieces. My story may be the antithesis for creativity, but I believe the true story is not what I am about but what and how it is translated. I resist attempts to be easily defined and invite people to relate their own experience to and from my art so that they take on a sense of ownership or at the very least realize a common tie between us.
