  3. How did Lemon Street Gallery & Artspace, Inc start?

In the Spring of 1998, five artists, longing to unite the visual arts community, shared with others the idea of forming a co-op gallery. Because owning exhibit space is more secure than renting, two of the artists bought a handsome brick storefront that had apartments on the second floor to help pay the mortgage. Lemon Street Gallery opened with 13 artists on November 5, 1999...and we've been growing ever since.

Today, Lemon Street Gallery & ArtSpace, Inc. is a 501(c)3, tax-exempt visual arts center averaging 35 to 45 exhibiting members, with our sights set on twice that number by our 10th anniversary in 2009. Two paid staff, artist-members, interns and volunteers learn about and assist in the various tasks associated with running our organization: like planning exhibitions, teaching classes and administering arts-focused partnerships within the community.

  4. Why is it called Lemon Street?

Our 6000 squ. ft. building was built in 1919 on the corner of Lemon Street and Sheridan Road. In 1926, Kenosha streets were changed to a number system, and Lemon Street became 46th Street. To honor the history, we took the name. The two 4' x 13' tile and glass mosaics pictured here are titled, "Art is Life." They were created in 2002, funded by a Wisconsin Arts Board - Artist & Community Collaboration Grant. In 2003, the Kenosha Area Chamber of Commerce recognized these works with a Business Beautification Award.

  5. What is the mission of Lemon Street Gallery?

  6. What services does Lemon Street Gallery offer its members?

Being an exhibiting member of Lemon Street Gallery can be a valuable experience in a number of ways. We are an artist’s collective. Members vote on organizational decisions, and retain control of their work. Some of the obvious benefits include: A formal gallery to present your work that is open every week of the year. Sales are more frequent because we have professional sales staff and provide Visa/MC/Discover service. We also provide members teaching and learning opportunities in our classrooms.

Less obvious, and more important, are the intangible benefits. Throughout the year, gifted artists and their great work surround us. As a team, we are so much more effective in marketing and promotion. Because the gallery rotates exhibits every 3 months and we exhibit in a number of other venues, artists are coaxed to remain productive, and seem to be focused on creating the best they have in them.

  7. How do I become an artist member, and what are the requirements for membership?
