Eric Houghton treats every artistic undertaking as an opportunity to reinterpret the subject, challenge the viewers, and amuse himself. Whether he is writing, painting, or playing music, the fundamentals of his approach are consistent- contrast, invention, humor, irreverence. His paintings are whimsical and colorful yet dark and mysterious at once. One can often get lost in the depth and narrative of what appears to be a simple scene at first glance.
As a craftsman he is a self taught virtuoso of canvas construction, inventing the bow-frame and other odd shaped canvases which often fit together like large, very expensive puzzles. His years on Jackson Square shaped the painting style we’ve come to recognize as Eric Houghton’s today. But now, two years after being displaced by flood and leaving New Orleans for good, the paintings keep coming and the subjects never cease. His paintings can be found in galleries and private collections throughout the country and around the world. Eric currently resides in Kenosha, Wisconsin with his wife and three kids.
